Typology of land use competition figures in peri-urban and rural areas.
Previous works on rural areas showed that they are strongly connected to globalization processes, but also highlighted the lack of standardization or homogenization of spaces and territorial dynamics and their diversity. A typology of the various rural development regional and local contexts is crucial. EDORA discriminates 4 types of rural regions with regards to their population and the proximity of a city nearby, in order to separate rural from urban areas and to map the areas targeted by rural development policies. Therefore, these categories give little information about the various types of challenges that rural localities are facing and the specific resources they can use to overcome them. The objective of WP2 is to elaborate a common methodology of multi-criteria analysis that will enable to produce a more accurate typology at both regional (NUT 3) and sub-regional levels (LAU 1). For this purpose, we will introduce in the typology land use attributes and will design indicators of land use competition pattern (SAU loss, housing and industrial building permits, new transportation infrastructures, demographic dynamics etc), seen as a key dimension of development strategy choices and governance. We will use static but also dynamic indicators. Our objective is to follow the evolution of land use competition pattern throughout time in order to identify the several development paths that led to similar current situations, and then investigate them in peri-urban areas (WP5).
Description of work
  • 1. Define the spatial and social figures of land use competition from bibliographic survey and working meetings with project partners.
  • 2. Assess the data sets produced by European and national organizations, in order to design a common data base dedicated to the regional and sub-regional analysis.
  • 3. Design land use competition indicators specific to the working level chosen and perform calculation for each regional or sub-regional entity of the five project countries.
  • 4. Perform diachronic analysis and multi-criteria statistics in order to discriminate different types of land use competition patterns and dynamics.
  • 2.1. Report on spatial and social figures of land use competition in rural and peri-urban areas in Europe.
  • 2.2. Report on the indicators selected to assess land use competition, the common data base designed and the typology methods used.
  • 2.3. New typology of rural areas for EU smart development.
Milestones and expected result
  • M1: Methodology for the building of a common data base.
  • M2: New conceptual framework for the analysis of development paths;
  • M3: Typology of land use competition figures in rural and peri-urban areas applied to the five European country of the project.
